Spending Cuts

Spending Cuts: Cuts $1.7T, incl. $700B from Medicaid (work requirements) & $267B from SNAP (stricter eligibility). Critics: 8.6M may lose insurance. WH claims largest welfare reform ever.

The bill cuts $1.7 trillion in mandatory spending over 10 years, targeting social programs. Medicaid faces a $700 billion reduction through new work requirements (e.g., 20 hours/week for able-bodied adults), which critics say could leave 8.6 million uninsured (per Urban Institute). SNAP (food stamps) is cut by $267 billion with stricter eligibility (e.g., income limits tightened, asset tests reintroduced). Other cuts include $200 billion from Affordable Care Act subsidies and $100 billion from education grants. The White House calls this the “largest-ever welfare reform,” arguing it promotes self-reliance. Opponents, including some Senate Republicans, warn it will increase poverty and strain state budgets, especially in rural areas reliant on these programs.
